Boating around Okoboji
Arnolds Park, a historic amusement park, sits on the shore of West Okoboji, and the Queen II excursion boat cruises the lake. Spirit Lake is Iowa’s largest natural lake.
Boats are stored for winter. West Okoboji is deep and clear for a Midwest lake, with a busy summer shoreline. Okoboji Yacht Club runs sailboat races, and Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, a university field station, sits on the west shore. Summer weekends bring heavy boat traffic, and the chop from wakes is hard on loose batteries. Ice fishing for perch and walleye is popular once the lakes freeze. Boats here are stored from fall to spring, so charge batteries before storage and keep lead-acid batteries on a maintainer.
Recommended setups
Pontoons and tritoons
A pontoon spends more time idling and anchored than running, so the engine has little chance to recharge the battery. Plugging in a charger after every trip, or switching to lithium with its faster charge acceptance, keeps a pontoon ready for the next evening cruise around East Okoboji Lake.
Watersports boats
Wake and ski boats on West Okoboji Lake run big stereos, ballast pumps and lights. A strong cranking battery plus a separate house battery for the audio system is the best setup.
Sailboats and cruising boats
If your sailboat on West Okoboji Lake uses a lot of power at anchor, lithium is worth a look. It provides more usable capacity per pound and accepts charge faster. Before you switch, check that your alternator, charger and solar controller support lithium.
Typical boats around Okoboji
Walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and muskie are fished. Pontoons, wake boats and sailboats fill the lakes.
Battery care for Okoboji boats
Pontoons need house power for stereos and lights.
Upper Midwest lakes freeze solid in winter, and boats are stored from fall to spring. Charge batteries before storage, and remove them or keep them on a maintainer. For early and late season fishing, heated lithium batteries can be charged in cold weather.
The open-water season is short, so anglers fish hard when they can. Lithium batteries give steady trolling motor power all day and recharge quickly.

FAQ
How should I store my battery over a Iowa winter?
Charge it fully first. Lead-acid and AGM batteries should stay on a maintainer or be topped up every month or two, because a discharged lead-acid battery can freeze and crack. Lithium batteries hold their charge for months; store them with the battery switch off and charge them only above freezing unless they have internal heating.
How do lead-acid batteries ship?
Lead-acid and AGM batteries ship free by curbside truck freight to the lower 48, the same as lithium.
Can you ship to my marina?
We can ship to most addresses, but marinas with restricted access or no way to receive freight may cost extra or need special arrangements. A home or business address is usually easiest. Contact us before you order if you want to ship to a marina.
Who schedules the delivery?
The freight carrier calls the delivery phone number you enter at checkout to set up a delivery window. Someone needs to be there to inspect the shipment and sign.
