Dakota Lithium vs Battle Born for Boats

Dakota Lithium and Battle Born are two of the best-known lithium brands among boaters. Both make LiFePO4 batteries, both are popular with anglers and cruisers, and both show up in plenty of forum debates. But in our store, their lineups point in different directions. This comparison looks at what each brand offers, based on our product listings, and which one fits different boats.
The short version
- Dakota Lithium (in stock in our store): dual-purpose DL batteries that can crank an engine, in compact and group 24 sizes, with 11-year listed warranties.
- Battle Born: deep-cycle batteries in group 24, 27/31, GC2 and GC3 sizes, plus a 24V model and compact base-series batteries.

Comparing popular models
Dakota Lithium DL 12V 135Ah heated vs Battle Born 12V 100Ah
- Dakota: 135Ah, 1000 CCA, group 24, 27.2 lb, internal heating, IP65, 135A continuous.
- Battle Born: 100Ah, group 27/31, 31 lb, deep-cycle, heating and Bluetooth depending on version, 3,000–5,000 cycles listed.
The Dakota offers more capacity in a smaller case plus cranking ability. The Battle Born fits group 27/31 trays and is a proven house and trolling battery. Choose based on whether you need starting power and what tray you have.
Dakota Lithium DL 12V 60Ah vs Battle Born 12V 75Ah
- Dakota: 60Ah, 1000 CCA, group 24, 16.5 lb.
- Battle Born: 75Ah, group 24, 27 lb, deep-cycle.
The Dakota is lighter and can start engines; the Battle Born has more capacity for deep-cycle loads.
Small batteries
Both brands make compact batteries for fish finders and kayaks: Dakota’s 12V 10Ah mini and Battle Born’s 10Ah, 20Ah and 30Ah base series.
Which is better for your boat?
Single-battery boats
Dakota Lithium’s DL line is designed for this. One battery starts the engine and runs electronics. See the Dakota Lithium marine battery guide.
House banks on cruisers and sailboats
Battle Born’s GC2 and GC3 sizes drop into golf-cart trays, and its 100Ah 27/31 fits common marine trays. See the Battle Born batteries boat guide.
Trolling motors
Both work in series banks of matched batteries. Battle Born lists series connections up to 48V. Dakota’s dedicated deep-cycle trolling batteries are currently out of stock in our store, so for single-case 24V or 36V options, also look at EPOCH, Lithium Rhino and Interstate.
Cold climates
Dakota’s DL 135Ah lists internal heating. Battle Born offers heated variations of some models; confirm the version.
Real-world scenarios
A 16-foot aluminum boat with a 25 hp tiller and a fish finder. One battery has to start the engine and run electronics. The Dakota DL 12V 60Ah fits a group 24 tray, lists 1000 CCA and weighs 16.5 pounds. A Battle Born battery would handle the electronics well but isn’t listed as a starting battery, so this boat would need a separate cranking battery. Dakota wins on simplicity here.
A 38-foot sailboat replacing four golf-cart batteries. The trays are GC2 size, and the owner wants a large house bank with no starting duty. Battle Born’s 12V 100Ah GC2 drops straight into the existing trays, and two or three in parallel give a large usable bank. Dakota’s in-stock lineup doesn’t include a GC2-size battery. Battle Born wins on fit.
A northern walleye boat that fishes in April and November. Cold charging matters. Dakota’s DL 135Ah lists internal heating, and some Battle Born variations offer heating too. Either can work; confirm the heated version and compare tray fit.
A 24V trolling motor on a small bass boat. Battle Born’s 24V 50Ah puts the whole bank in one case. With Dakota, you’d wire two 12V batteries in series, and Dakota’s dedicated deep-cycle trolling models are currently out of stock in our store. Battle Born, or a single-case battery from another brand, is the simpler path today.
Weight per amp-hour
Weight per amp-hour is a quick way to compare lithium batteries. Dakota’s DL 135Ah works out to about 0.2 pounds per amp-hour, the DL 60Ah about 0.28, and Battle Born’s 12V 100Ah about 0.31. Lower is lighter for the capacity, but remember that the Dakota DL models also include high cranking capability, and case size matters as much as weight for fit.
Charging
Both need LiFePO4 charging. Battle Born lists 14.2–14.6V charging for its 12V models. Dakota recommends 12V 10A or 20A chargers for its DL 12V batteries. Waterproof onboard chargers like those in the Allied Lithium chargers guide cover 36V and 48V systems.
Warranty
Dakota’s listings show 11 years. Battle Born’s base series shows 5 years, and larger models don’t list a warranty in our store, so check Battle Born’s current terms. Compare details in our Interstate guide if you want free-replacement-style coverage instead.
