Brand Guides & Comparisons

EPOCH vs Dakota Lithium: Marine Battery Comparison

Two lithium batteries installed side by side in a boat's rear compartment

EPOCH and Dakota Lithium are both popular LiFePO4 brands with anglers, and both list long warranties. But their lineups are built differently. EPOCH covers nearly every size and voltage, while Dakota Lithium’s in-stock lineup in our store centers on dual-purpose DL batteries. This comparison walks through where each brand fits, using our product listings.

The short version

  • Choose EPOCH if you want Bluetooth monitoring, a single-case 24V or 36V trolling battery, large house banks or a wide choice of sizes.
  • Choose Dakota Lithium if you want a light, group 24 dual-purpose battery that cranks an engine and runs accessories.

At-a-glance summary: EPOCH offers far more sizes and voltages, with Bluetooth on most models and heating on many; Dakota Lithium's DL dual-purpose batteries pack high cranking amps into light group 24 cases; Both list 11-year warranties on their main lines; choose by job, fit, features and current stock
Key takeaways: EPOCH vs Dakota Lithium: Marine Battery Comparison

Head-to-head: 12V around 100Ah

EPOCH 12V 105Ah Essential vs Dakota DL 12V 135Ah heated

  • EPOCH: 105Ah, group 24, 22.1 lb, Bluetooth, heating, 105A continuous.
  • Dakota: 135Ah, group 24, 27.2 lb, heating, IP65, 135A continuous, 1000 CCA.

Both fit a group 24 tray and both are heated. The Dakota offers more capacity and lists cranking power. The EPOCH is lighter and adds Bluetooth monitoring. If you need to start an engine from it, Dakota has the edge. If you want to watch state of charge on your phone, EPOCH does.

Head-to-head: dual-purpose

EPOCH 12V 172Ah dual-purpose vs Dakota DL 12V 135Ah

  • EPOCH: 172Ah, group 31, 40 lb, 1000 CCA, Bluetooth, no heating listed.
  • Dakota: 135Ah, group 24, 27.2 lb, 1000 CCA, heating.

The EPOCH has more capacity and Bluetooth but needs a group 31 tray. The Dakota is smaller, lighter and heated. For a cold climate, Dakota; for maximum capacity in a group 31 tray, EPOCH.

Small dual-purpose

Dakota’s DL 12V 25Ah (300 CCA, 6.4 lb) suits small outboards and personal watercraft. EPOCH’s smallest battery in our store is the 12V 50Ah Essential, which isn’t listed as a starting battery.

Trolling motors

For a single-case 36V trolling battery, EPOCH’s 36V 50Ah Essential and 36V 100Ah are in stock, both heated with Bluetooth. Dakota’s 36V batteries are currently listed as out of stock in our store. With Dakota, you’d build a 36V bank from three matched 12V batteries in series. See Lithium Rhino vs EPOCH 36V for another single-case option, and how to choose a trolling motor battery for sizing.

House banks

EPOCH’s 12V 300Ah, 314Ah Eco, 334Ah and 460Ah models cover large house banks in one or two batteries. Dakota’s largest in-stock battery is the DL 135Ah. For big cruisers, EPOCH is the more practical choice; for comparison with another house-bank brand, read Battle Born vs EPOCH.

Charging

Both need LiFePO4 profiles. EPOCH makes matched chargers and DC-DC chargers, including a two-bank 12V/36V onboard charger. Dakota recommends 12V 10A or 20A chargers for its DL 12V models. Either brand’s batteries work with any properly configured LiFePO4 charger.

Warranty

Both list 11 years on their main lines in our store: EPOCH Essential and Elite, and Dakota’s DL batteries. EPOCH’s Eco line lists 6 years. Read each maker’s terms for coverage details.

Real-world scenarios

Single-battery center console with a 90 hp outboard. Dakota DL 12V 135Ah (if your engine maker approves lithium starting) or EPOCH 12V 172Ah dual-purpose. Pick by tray size and whether you want heating or Bluetooth.

36V bass boat. EPOCH 36V 50Ah or 100Ah in a single case, or Lithium Rhino. Dakota would require three 12V batteries and is limited by current stock.

Kayak or jon boat electronics. Dakota 12V 10Ah mini, or EPOCH 12V 50Ah for more capacity.

Cruiser house bank. EPOCH 12V 300Ah or larger.

Monitoring: how much does Bluetooth matter?

LiFePO4 voltage barely changes between about 90% and 20% charge, so a voltmeter tells you little about how much energy is left. Bluetooth monitoring solves that by reporting state of charge directly from the battery’s BMS. For trolling motor users who need to know whether they can keep spot-locking until dark, or cruisers deciding whether to run the generator, it’s genuinely useful. If you choose a battery without Bluetooth, such as a Dakota DL model, a shunt-based battery monitor installed on the negative cable does the same job and works with any battery. Budget for one if monitoring matters to you.

Weight and space

Weight per amp-hour is close between the two brands’ comparable models. The EPOCH 12V 105Ah works out to about 0.21 pounds per amp-hour, and the Dakota DL 135Ah about 0.20. The bigger differences come from case size: Dakota’s DL 135Ah fits a lot of capacity into a group 24 case, while EPOCH’s dual-purpose 172Ah needs a group 31 tray. Measure your tray before deciding. Exact-fit trays from each maker, like EPOCH’s tray for the 105Ah or Dakota’s group 24 marine tray, make installation easier.

Alternator charging

Both brands’ batteries accept high charging current, which can stress an outboard’s charging system or a small alternator. Many boaters with lithium house or trolling banks use a DC-DC charger between the start battery and the lithium bank. If the lithium battery is also the starting battery, follow your engine maker’s guidance on lithium compatibility, and ask the battery maker about any alternator limits.
