The water around Fort Lauderdale
Port Everglades is a deep-water port with direct access to the Atlantic, and the Intracoastal runs north and south. Hillsboro Inlet lies to the north.
The city’s canal neighborhoods, from Las Olas Isles to Rio Vista, put thousands of private docks within a short idle of the New River and the Intracoastal. Bridges open on schedules, so most local boaters plan runs to Port Everglades around them. Offshore, the reefs run in lines parallel to the beach, and the Gulf Stream is close enough for day trips to deep water.
Batteries that fit Fort Lauderdale boats
Center consoles and offshore boats
Center consoles that run offshore from Fort Lauderdale usually have one cranking battery per engine plus a house battery for electronics, pumps and lights. For cranking, a Group 27 or 31 AGM with high marine cranking amps is the common choice. A lithium dual-purpose battery like the EPOCH 172Ah can serve as a house battery and an emergency start, and it weighs a fraction of an equivalent AGM.
Cruisers, trawlers and houseboats
For large boats on the New River, house bank capacity is key. Match your bank to your inverter and charger, and replace all batteries in the bank at once.
Pontoons and tritoons
Most pontoons on the New River run a single 12V battery for the engine, stereo, lights and maybe a small trolling motor. That works until the music runs through a long afternoon at anchor. A dual-purpose battery, AGM or lithium, handles both cranking and accessory loads better, and a second battery on a switch keeps starting power in reserve.
Boats and fishing in Fort Lauderdale
Offshore fishing for sailfish, mahi and tuna, and reef fishing. Yachts and center consoles dominate.
Seasons and storage
Large yachts need big house banks matched to their chargers and inverters.
Offshore boats here often run big electronics packages. Keep cranking and house circuits separate, and replace batteries as matched sets.
Southeast Florida is hot and humid year round, and boats are used every month. Heat ages batteries faster than anything else, so keep them charged and ventilated.
