Redfish, speckled trout and black drum are the main targets, and wade fishing is very popular. Shallow-draft bay boats are the norm, along with birding tour boats in winter.
The water around Rockport
Aransas Bay, Copano Bay, St. Charles Bay and Little Bay surround the Rockport area, with oyster reefs, grass flats and marsh shorelines. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, home to the wintering whooping cranes, lies across St. Charles Bay. The Rockport Harbor and Fulton Harbor host fishing and birding boats.
Rockport took a direct hit from Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and the town has rebuilt its harbor and waterfront. Before a storm, charge batteries and switch them off.
Recommended setups
Flats skiffs and bay boats
For a skiff or bay boat that spends the day poling and creeping along the flats near Copano Bay, trolling motor capacity is the number that matters. Measure your current batteries (group size, voltage and how many) before you order. If you stay with lead-acid, Group 31 deep-cycle batteries give the most runtime per battery; if you move to lithium, one 36V battery wired for your motor makes the system simpler and lighter.
Offshore center consoles
Center consoles that run offshore from Rockport usually have one cranking battery per engine plus a house battery for electronics, pumps and lights. For cranking, a Group 27 or 31 AGM with high marine cranking amps is the common choice. A lithium dual-purpose battery like the EPOCH 172Ah can serve as a house battery and an emergency start, and it weighs a fraction of an equivalent AGM.
Seasons and storage
Wade fishermen often leave the boat at anchor with electronics on. A separate house battery keeps the cranking battery fresh.
The northern Gulf Coast has long, hot summers and mild winters, with salt air and humidity year round. Heat is the main battery killer, so keep batteries charged and ventilated. Sealed AGM or lithium batteries are a good fit for boats that live in the water or on lifts.
Hurricane season runs from June through November. Before a storm, charge and disconnect batteries, and if you haul out, store small lithium batteries indoors.
