Typical boats around Portland
Striped bass, mackerel and groundfish. Lobster boats, sailboats and center consoles are common.
The water around Portland
Portland Harbor and the Fore River are home to commercial fishing boats, ferries and marinas. Casco Bay’s islands, including Peaks Island and Great Diamond Island, are reachable by boat.
Casco Bay’s cold water and strong tides make it a challenging but beautiful place to boat. The Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country, guards the harbor entrance. The working waterfront along Commercial Street still hosts lobster boats and fish processors next to marinas, and the bay’s islands are a short run from downtown. Fog is common in summer, so radar and chartplotters run for long stretches, which puts extra load on house batteries.
Battery types and sizes for Portland
Twin-engine and offshore boats
Offshore boats depend on their batteries more than any other boat on Casco Bay: radar, sonar, chartplotters, livewells and VHF all draw power while drifting over a ledge. Size your house battery for a full day of electronics with the engines off, and keep it isolated from the cranking batteries with a switch or combiner. A multi-bank onboard charger keeps every battery topped up at the dock.
Sailboats
Sailboats and cruisers in Portland rely on a house bank for lights, refrigeration, instruments and an autopilot, plus a starting battery for the auxiliary engine. A bank of 6V golf-cart batteries wired in series is a traditional choice; lithium banks like the EPOCH 12V 300Ah or Battle Born 100Ah give more usable capacity and recharge faster from solar or the engine.
Flats skiffs and bay boats
For a skiff or bay boat that spends the day poling and creeping along the flats near the Fore River, trolling motor capacity is the number that matters. Measure your current batteries (group size, voltage and how many) before you order. If you stay with lead-acid, Group 31 deep-cycle batteries give the most runtime per battery; if you move to lithium, one 36V battery wired for your motor makes the system simpler and lighter.
Keeping batteries healthy in Maine
Boats are hauled in winter. Store batteries properly.
The boating season is short, so it pays to have batteries ready in spring. Test them before launch, and replace any that won’t hold a charge.
New England and Long Island boats are usually hauled for winter. Charge batteries fully before storage, and keep lead-acid batteries on a maintainer or remove them. A discharged lead-acid battery can freeze and crack.

Questions from Maine boaters
Do I need a heated lithium battery for Portland?
Only if you plan to charge in freezing weather. Standard lithium batteries should not be charged below 32°F. Batteries with internal heating, like several EPOCH models and the Dakota Lithium DL+ 135Ah, warm themselves before charging. For normal spring-to-fall use with winter storage, a standard lithium battery is fine.
Can you ship to my marina?
We can ship to most addresses, but marinas with restricted access or no way to receive freight may cost extra or need special arrangements. A home or business address is usually easiest. Contact us before you order if you want to ship to a marina.
How do lead-acid batteries ship?
Lead-acid and AGM batteries ship free by curbside truck freight to the lower 48, the same as lithium.
Do chargers and accessories ship free?
Chargers, accessories and lithium batteries of $150 or less ship free when your cart subtotal is $150 or more. Otherwise a flat shipping rate applies, shown at checkout.
