Okeechobee waterways
Taylor Creek runs through town to the lake, and the Kissimmee River enters the lake nearby. The Okeechobee Waterway crosses the lake, linking the Atlantic and the Gulf. The lake is shallow, with large grass and reed beds.
The Herbert Hoover Dike surrounds the lake, and public ramps and fish camps sit along the rim canal on the north shore. Lake Okeechobee covers about 730 square miles but averages only about 9 feet deep, so wind can build a short, steep chop quickly.
Boats and fishing in Okeechobee
Bass fishing is the main draw, with tournaments throughout the year. Crappie (specks) are popular in winter. Bass boats with 36V trolling setups are common.
Batteries that fit Okeechobee boats
Bass boats and tournament rigs
Bass boats on Lake Okeechobee usually run a 24V or 36V trolling motor and a separate cranking battery, plus electronics that can draw several amps at the console and bow. Lithium trolling batteries hold full voltage until nearly empty, so the motor doesn’t slow down late in the day, and they save a lot of weight in the back of the boat.
Pontoons and tritoons
A pontoon spends more time idling and anchored than running, so the engine has little chance to recharge the battery. Plugging in a charger after every trip, or switching to lithium with its faster charge acceptance, keeps a pontoon ready for the next evening cruise around the Kissimmee River.
Kayaks and small boats
For paddlers and small-boat owners on the Kissimmee River, lighter is better. Lithium batteries weigh less than half as much as lead-acid batteries of similar usable capacity and are rated for far more charge cycles.
Keeping batteries healthy in Florida
Big, shallow water can get rough in wind. A strong trolling battery helps you hold position.
Central Florida’s lakes are fresh water, so corrosion is less of a problem, but summer heat is just as tough on batteries. Keep them charged and stored out of direct sun.
Many inland boats are trailered and sit between trips. A maintenance charger or a lithium battery helps.
