Town by town
Bradenton. Bradenton sits on the south bank of the wide Manatee River, a few miles from where it empties into Tampa Bay. The river holds snook in winter and tarpon in summer, and the mouth of the river and Terra Ceia Bay are known for redfish and trout.
Anna Maria. The city of Anna Maria fills the north tip of Anna Maria Island, where Tampa Bay meets the Gulf. The mouth of Tampa Bay brings tarpon, kingfish, cobia and Spanish mackerel past the island, and the sound holds trout and redfish.
Holmes Beach. Holmes Beach is the middle city on Anna Maria Island, with canal homes on the sound side and Gulf beaches on the other. The sound is a good snook, trout and redfish area, and the Gulf beaches see snook in summer.
Bradenton Beach. Bradenton Beach covers the south end of Anna Maria Island, from Bridge Street down to Longboat Pass. Longboat Pass is known for snook and tarpon, and the bay side holds trout and redfish on the grass.
Longboat Key. Longboat Key is a long, narrow barrier island between Longboat Pass and New Pass, split between Manatee and Sarasota counties. Snook along the beaches, tarpon in the passes in summer and trout on the bay flats.
Cortez. Cortez is one of the last working fishing villages on Florida’s Gulf coast, with fish houses and commercial boats still tied up along the waterfront. Commercial and recreational fishing share the water here.
Palmetto. Palmetto sits on the north bank of the Manatee River, across from downtown Bradenton, with marinas and a short run to Tampa Bay. Terra Ceia Bay and the river mouth are known for snook, redfish and trout.
Parrish. Parrish is a growing community in north Manatee County, inland from the coast but close to the upper Manatee River and Lake Manatee. The upper river holds snook in cool months and bass in its freshwater reaches.
