Town by town
Leesburg. Leesburg sits between Lake Harris and Lake Griffin, two of the big lakes in the Harris Chain, and calls itself the Lakefront City. The Harris Chain is a well-known bass fishery and a regular stop for tournaments, and the lakes also hold crappie (specks), bluegill and catfish.
Tavares. Tavares calls itself America’s Seaplane City, and its waterfront on Lake Dora has a seaplane base right next to the boat docks. Bass, specks and bluegill are the main targets, and pontoon cruising through the Dora Canal is a local tradition.
Mount Dora. Mount Dora is a hilltop town overlooking Lake Dora, with a lighthouse, a classic boating history and plenty of lakefront homes. Lake Dora is known for bass and specks, and Mount Dora has a strong classic and antique boat culture, with wooden boats out on the water in good weather.
Eustis. Eustis sits on the eastern shore of Lake Eustis, with a downtown waterfront and access to the rest of the Harris Chain. Bass and specks are the main draw, along with bluegill and catfish.
Clermont. Clermont is known for its rolling hills and its own chain of lakes, separate from the Harris Chain, with clear water that’s popular for skiing and wakeboarding. The chain holds bass and specks, but it’s just as popular for watersports.
Astor. Astor is a small river town on the St. The St.
Umatilla. Umatilla is a small town at the edge of the Ocala National Forest, surrounded by lakes and close to the springs of the forest. Bass, specks and bluegill on the local lakes, and paddling on the spring runs.
