Hernando County sits at the south end of Florida’s Nature Coast, with shallow Gulf flats, the spring-fed Weeki Wachee River and canal neighborhoods in Hernando Beach.

Hernando Beach and Bayport are the county’s main Gulf access points, and the Weeki Wachee River runs from its famous spring to the Gulf. The flats here are known for scallops in summer, along with trout, redfish and grouper further out. Spring Hill, the county’s largest community, is home to many trailered boats.

Town by town

Hernando Beach. Hernando Beach is a canal community on the Nature Coast, the stretch of Gulf shoreline where the water stays shallow and grassy for miles. The shallow grass flats here are among the best scallop grounds on the Gulf coast in season, and they also hold trout and redfish.

Weeki Wachee. Weeki Wachee is famous for its spring and its mermaid show, but for boaters it’s the clear spring-fed river that matters, running about 7 miles from the spring to the Gulf. The lower river and its mouth hold snook, redfish and trout, and the clear water lets you sight-fish.

Spring Hill. Spring Hill is the largest community in Hernando County, and many of its residents keep a boat in the driveway for trips to the Gulf or to local lakes. Scallops, trout and redfish on the Gulf flats, and bass on inland lakes.
