Illustrated waterfront banner for Virginia

Hampton sits on the north shore of Hampton Roads, one of the largest natural harbors in the world, where the James River meets the Chesapeake Bay.

Boaters in Hampton order from us online and we ship to them. Every lithium battery over $150 and every lead-acid or AGM battery ships free by curbside freight anywhere in the lower 48 states, and parts and chargers ship free on orders of $150 or more.

What people run and fish for in Hampton

Rockfish, speckled trout, flounder and cobia are popular, and sailing is popular on the harbor and bay. Center consoles, sailboats and bay boats are common.

Boating around Hampton

The Hampton River runs past downtown Hampton’s waterfront and public piers, and the Back River leads north to the bay. Hampton Roads is busy with commercial and Navy ships, and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel crosses the harbor. Fort Monroe, at Old Point Comfort, overlooks the entrance.

The area’s sailing tradition is strong, with yacht clubs and the Hampton Cup Regatta, a long-running hydroplane race, held on Mill Creek. Hampton’s location gives easy access to both the lower bay and the Atlantic via the Chesapeake Bay mouth.

Recommended setups

Offshore center consoles

Center consoles that run offshore from Hampton usually have one cranking battery per engine plus a house battery for electronics, pumps and lights. For cranking, a Group 27 or 31 AGM with high marine cranking amps is the common choice. A lithium dual-purpose battery like the EPOCH 172Ah can serve as a house battery and an emergency start, and it weighs a fraction of an equivalent AGM.

Sailboats and cruisers

Many sailboat owners around Chesapeake Bay stay with AGM or flooded batteries for simplicity and cost. Whichever you choose, keep the house bank and starting battery separate, and replace all batteries in a bank at the same time.

Flats skiffs and bay boats

For a skiff or bay boat that spends the day poling and creeping along the flats near Chesapeake Bay, trolling motor capacity is the number that matters. Measure your current batteries (group size, voltage and how many) before you order. If you stay with lead-acid, Group 31 deep-cycle batteries give the most runtime per battery; if you move to lithium, one 36V battery wired for your motor makes the system simpler and lighter.

Climate, storage and winterizing in Hampton

Boats in the water over winter need maintainers or disconnected batteries. Lead-acid batteries can freeze if discharged.

The Mid-Atlantic has a real boating season, from spring through fall, and most boats are hauled or laid up for winter. Before winter storage, charge batteries fully and either remove them or keep them on a maintenance charger. Lead-acid batteries can freeze if left discharged.

Standard lithium batteries should not be charged below freezing. If you plan to charge in cold weather, choose a lithium battery with internal heating, or charge only when temperatures are above freezing.

How shipping to Hampton works

  • Free lithium freight: lithium batteries over $150 ship free, curbside, to the lower 48.
  • Parts and chargers: free shipping when your cart subtotal is $150 or more.
  • Lead-acid and AGM: free curbside truck freight to the lower 48, the same as lithium.
  • Curbside means the driver brings the shipment to the end of the truck at your curb or driveway.
  • Inside delivery, or hard-to-reach spots like marinas with restricted access, may cost extra, so a home or business address is usually best.

Hampton shipping FAQ

Do I need a heated lithium battery for Hampton?

Only if you plan to charge in freezing weather. Standard lithium batteries should not be charged below 32°F. Batteries with internal heating, like several EPOCH models and the Dakota Lithium DL+ 135Ah, warm themselves before charging. For normal spring-to-fall use with winter storage, a standard lithium battery is fine.

Can you ship to my marina?

We can ship to most addresses, but marinas with restricted access or no way to receive freight may cost extra or need special arrangements. A home or business address is usually easiest. Contact us before you order if you want to ship to a marina.

Do chargers and accessories ship free?

Chargers, accessories and lithium batteries of $150 or less ship free when your cart subtotal is $150 or more. Otherwise a flat shipping rate applies, shown at checkout.

How do lead-acid batteries ship?

Lead-acid and AGM batteries ship free by curbside truck freight to the lower 48, the same as lithium.
